The 23rd World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS 2026), one of the most influential events in global soil science, was held in Nanjing, China, from June 8 to 12. More than 3,000 scientists from over 100 countries and regions gathered to discuss the theme "Soil and the Shared Future for Humanity."

As an official supporting organization of the congress, the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, organized a delegation of more than 80 researchers to participate in the event. Through academic exchanges and international cooperation activities, IARRP researchers shared the institute's latest achievements and strengthened connections with the global soil science community.

During the congress, five IARRP scientists — Yu Qiangyi, Peng Xinhua, Sun Nan, Qian Jianping, and Lu Miao — chaired scientific sessions on topics such as soil monitoring networks, black soil conservation, soil organic matter dynamics, national soil survey technologies, and soil property mapping. These sessions attracted nearly 500 participants from around the world.

Xu Minggang, Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Efficient Utilization of Arable Land in China, delivered an invited presentation on differences in soil carbon sequestration efficiency and crop stability in typical farmlands in China, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Researchers, including He Ping, Zhang Wenju, Yang Jianjun, and Peng Xinhua, also presented studies on nutrient management, agricultural carbon sinks, the evaluation of cultivated land quality, and improvement of saline-alkaline soils.

According to IARRP Director General Wu Wenbin, the institute will continue to strengthen international collaboration, learn from global advances in soil science, and contribute to the development of a world-class cultivated land science research system that supports China's national food security strategy.
