IARRP team attends APEC workshop on promoting digital transformation in agriculture in Hanoi, Vietnam

From Sept 27 to 30, 2023, at the invitation of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, -Dr Yu Qiangyi, Senior Researcher of the Innovation Team of Smart Agriculture, the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), went to Hanoi, Vietnam, to attend the APEC workshop on promoting digital transformation in agriculture.

Representatives from 10 APEC member economies, including China, Russia, Canada, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Chinese Taipei, participated in the conference, totaling over 50 people, including government officials, researchers, and business personnel.

The seminar shared cases, experiences, and practices of APEC member economies in promoting digital transformation in agriculture. In-depth discussions were conducted on the opportunities, challenges, potential tools, technological innovations, and policy promotion in the digital transformation of agriculture. Yu presented cases of using remote sensing and other information technologies to promote the digital management of cultivated land. He shared the relevant information on China's formulation and implementation of the "The Development Plan for Digital Agriculture and Rural Areas (2019-2025)" and presided over two thematic discussions on the technological model and policy mechanism for digital transformation in agriculture.

The seminar unanimously recognized the increasingly important role of remote sensing technology in promoting digital agriculture. Relevant cases include Russia's digital land use system, Malaysia's rice geographic information system, and Thailand's monitoring of rice production and palm tree area. In addition, digital economy cooperation has become a new engine for promoting regional economic growth, and the prospects for digital transformation in agriculture are enormous, and China's efforts in promoting digital economic development are worth learning from. The seminar will provide case support for the APEC Leaders' Summit and ministerial meetings in promoting digital transformation in agriculture.
