The Key Laboratory of Agricultural Remote Sensing of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China (formerly known as the Ministry of Agriculture of China) was established in 2002. During the evaluation of the laboratory, it was named the Key Laboratory of Agricultural Remote Sensing and Digital Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture. It was renamed the Key Laboratory of Agricultural Information Technology of the Ministry of Agriculture in 2011, the Key Laboratory of Agricultural Remote Sensing of the Ministry of Agriculture in 2016, and the Key Laboratory of Agricultural Remote Sensing of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China in 2018.

As a comprehensive key laboratory under the agricultural remote sensing discipline cluster, the laboratory is responsible for guiding the construction and operation of four other related specialized key laboratories. Its main tasks include conducting fundamental research on agricultural applications and innovation in cutting-edge technologies, solving major, key and common scientific and technological problems that restrict industrial development, undertaking fundamental work in agricultural science and technology, and carrying out research on the theories and key technologies in agricultural quantitative remote sensing, crop condition remote sensing, agricultural disaster remote sensing, spatial analysis and stimulation, digital agriculture and smart agriculture, and agricultural spatial information standards and norms.
