There are three main problems in the production of slow release fertilizers, namely low degradability, high cost, and low efficiency. To solve these problems, researchers in the project developed low cost and easily degradable slow release fertilizers with weathered coal, coal gauge and clay as raw materials. Production processes and key production equipment were also developed for slow/controlled release fertilizers for field crops. The research not only solved the technical problems of high cost, difficult degradation, and high nutrient loss, but also improved fertilizer production efficiency.

In addition, the developments made large-scale continuous production possible. The research results have been used in industrial production in large enterprises in Guangdong and Shandong provinces. The project helped enrich knowledge in ecology, soil science, and plant nutrition and contributes greatly to the fertilizer industry and scientific and technological advances in China.

The project has obtained 21 national invention patents, and 68 papers and one book have been published. As many as 26 doctoral and master students and post-doctoral fellows were involved in its research.
