IARRP team formulates standards for the prevention of nitrogen and phosphorus loss in paddy fields

By IARRP | Updated: 2022-08-12

According to Announcement No. 576 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, five technical standards for the prevention and control of nitrogen and phosphorus loss in paddy fields formulated by researcher Liu Hongbin of the Innovation Team of Non-point Source Pollution Control of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) will be officially implemented on Oct 1 this year.

"Technical specification for nitrogen and phosphorus loss control of paddy field Part 1: Water level control and drainage reduction of paddy field" (NY/T4162.1-2022) divides the risk period of nitrogen and phosphorus loss from paddy fields in China's main rice producing areas. Based on the characteristics of rice water demand and flood tolerance, it specifies the technical requirements for irrigation and drainage during the risk period. The function of paddy field ecological reservoir and the control of high-concentration paddy field drainage provide a standard basis. "Technical specification for nitrogen and phosphorus loss control of paddy field Part 2: optimal fertilization coupled with organic materials incorporation" (NY/T4162.2-2022) stipulates the relevant technical requirements for controlling application of nitrogen and phosphorus chemical fertilizers and increasing the application of organic materials in the main rice producing areas in China. It provides a standard basis for reducing nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in paddy field drainage and improving paddy field nitrogen and phosphorus retention capacity.

"Technical guidelines for integrated prevention and control of nitrogen and phosphorus loss from paddy field Part 1: Single-cropping rice of North China" (NY/T4163.1-2022),"Technical guidelines for integrated prevention and control of nitrogen and phosphorus loss from paddy field Part 2: Double-cropping Rice" (NY/T4163. 2-2022), "Technical guidelines for integrated prevention and control of nitrogen and phosphorus loss from paddy field Part 3: Paddy-upland rotation" (NY/T4163.3-2022) stipulate the relevant requirements for the assembly and application of key technologies for the prevention and control of nitrogen and phosphorus loss, such as control of source and sink, control of water and emission reduction, coordinated regulation of fields, ditches and ponds, and ecological purification for typical rice cropping models in major rice-producing areas in China. The loss of nitrogen and phosphorus plays an important role in improving the ecological function of paddy field production.

The above five agricultural industry standards have further developed the technical standard system for the prevention and control of agricultural non-point source pollution in China.

The Institute of Plant Protection, Soil and Fertilizer of Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Institute of Plant Nutrition and Environmental Resources of Liaoning Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing Normal University, Institute of Agricultural Environment and Resources of Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Soil and Fertilizer Institute, Jiangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences and other scientific research institutions participated in standard setting work. It was also funded by the National Key R&D Program "Comprehensive Prevention and Control Technology and Product Development of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Loss in Main Rice Production Areas" (2016YFD0800500).
