A research team on genetic breeding and cultivation of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences conducted a wild macro-fungi investigation and technical training activity at the Beijing Zoo on July 13, helping improve the team and graduate students’ professional ability to discover, collect and identify wild large fungi.

Huang Chenyang, research fellow with the institute, explained the growth season and collection locations of wide large fungi and gave tips on how to take pictures and produce collection records.

The investigation discovered nearly 30 species of wild large fungi and selected edible fungi with potential uses.

Huang introduced in detail the working principles of morphological identification and molecular identification of wild fungi, demonstrated operational techniques such as tissue separation and microscopic observation, and explained the molecular identification process and requirements.

The training helped graduate students have a more perceptual understanding of the investigation and collection of wild macro-fungi resources as well as species identification and germplasm preservation.

The students said that the activity strengthened their awareness of wild macro-fungal resources protection and of how resources can be utilized in innovative ways.
