In March 2014, witnessed by the leaders of China and Belgium, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Ghent University in Belgium signed the Agreement on the Establishment of a Joint Laboratory of Global Change and Food Security. According to the agreement, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences set up a joint laboratory at Ghent University, which was the first of its kind established by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Europe. The signing of the agreement marked a new stage of the scientific and technological cooperation between the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Belgium.

The laboratory has carried out joint research on key technologies in the field of global change and food security through multi-level and multi-dimensional project cooperation. It also helped enhance international exchanges, conduct joint training of talents and students, and boost exchange of academic materials and publications, which has strengthened academic depth and technological innovation between China and Belgium.
