In October 2013, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the International Plant Nutrition Institute on the Establishment of a Joint Laboratory for Plant Nutrition Research. Based on the agreement, the CAAS-IPNI Joint Laboratory for Plant Nutrition Research was established. It is affiliated to the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning of the CAAS.

As the first joint laboratory established by the IPNI overseas, it aims to conduct research on the high-efficiency utilization of fertilizer nutrients and the sustainable utilization of farmland and establish cooperation in key research fields of crop 4R nutrient management, nutrient cycling and balancing, and crop-based recommended fertilizer methods. 

In addition, the laboratory serves as a technology research and development platform and training base for cooperation between the two sides, and provides references for the government to formulate policy standards.
