In November 2015, Wang Hanzhong, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Warren Parker, CEO of New Zealand Forest Research Institute Ltd (SCION), signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and New Zealand Forest Research Institute Limited on the Establishment of the Joint Laboratory for Soil Molecular Ecology. In October 2016, the inaugural ceremony of the joint laboratory was held in Beijing, attended by Dr. Peter William Clinton, Chief Scientist of SCION, and Wang Daolong, Director of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS).

The joint laboratory has boosted cooperation between the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and New Zealand Forest Research Institute Limited in root-soil interface pollutants, molecular ecology mechanism of migration and transformation of biomass waste, pollution restoration, and food safety. It also strengthens talent exchanges and team building between both sides, and helps promote research in soil molecular ecology.
