MAP 2022 green report released

By IARRP | Updated: 2023-07-04

On May 10, the "MAP 2022 Green and High-quality Development Report" jointly compiled by China Agricultural Green Development Research Center and Sinochem Holdings Corporation Ltd.  was released by Syngenta Group China. This report is the third MAP green development report released since the establishment of Syngenta Group China.

The report closely focuses on the concept of "promoting high-quality development with green", and systematically evaluates the effect of agricultural green development brought about by its own business model in 2022. At the same time, the report shares with the public the actions and achievements of MAP in ensuring national food security, improving farmers' income and increasing the efficiency of agricultural operations, protecting the health of cultivated land, and promoting low-carbon and green development.

According to the evaluation results of the report, the green development index of MAP service farmers will reach 43.29 in 2022, which is 31.01% higher than that of non-MAP service farmers. The index of four first-level indicators, including resource conservation, environmental friendliness, industrial efficiency improvement, and green supply, is 19.45%, 11.93%, 38.44%, and 44.34% higher than that of non-MAP farmers.

In terms of crops, compared with farmers served by MAP and non-MAP service farmers, the green development index of economic crops has the fastest growth. The report covers a larger survey area and more farmers. The survey crops cover the three major staple foods and common cash crops in 21 provinces across the country. The surveyed cultivated land area is nearly 500,000 mu. The survey data is more comprehensive and representative.

In addition, the report shows that the carbon emission intensity of MAP service farmers has been reduced by an average of 13 percentage points, and the carbon emission intensity per unit of rice output has been lowered by MAP farmers by 16.57% compared with non-MAP farmers, of which methane MAP farmers have reduced by 10.44%. The efficient use of water resources, chemical fertilizers and pesticides has also been greatly improved. At the same time, the input cost per unit of farmland served by MAP decreased by an average of 0.41 yuan per kilogram of crops. Economic crops decreased the most by 17.6%, and the average income per mu increased by 1233.93 yuan ($ 170.73).

The data from the 2022 MAP Green Development Report shows that the rate of high-quality agricultural products provided by MAP services is 3.27% higher than non-MAP services, 24.28% higher than the coverage rate of regenerative agricultural technology measures, 7.23% higher than the coverage rate of high-quality varieties, and 25.27% higher than the standardized production.

The report not only reflects the remarkable achievements of Sinochem MAP in promoting the green and high-quality development of agriculture, but also touches on the shortcomings in all aspects of its development. The report provides specific assessments and data in four dimensions: resource conservation, environmental friendliness, industrial efficiency, and green supply. From these assessments, we can see the specific advantages and disadvantages of Sinochem MAP in these areas. It also provides directions for MAP to make up for its weaknesses and achieve high-quality green development during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period.

The report was compiled by the China Agricultural Green Development Research Center, led by Chief Researcher Yin Changbin and his team from the Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS).
