In July, 2025, Professor Peng Xinhua of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) was officially appointed as a member of the fifth Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) by the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) under the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Representing China, Peng will participate in efforts related to sustainable soil management. His appointment was confirmed during the 13th plenary meeting of the GSP, held from June 3-5, 2025, highlighting that Peng's expertise in soil science is recognized by international community.

The Global Soil Partnership (GSP) is a key FAO initiative aimed at promoting sustainable soil management by integrating global resources to tackle soil degradation challenges. The ITPS comprises 27 leading soil experts from various countries, providing authoritative intellectual support for global soil policy-making and technology promotion. As a representative of China, Peng Xinhua will share China's approaches to managing degraded agricultural soils and enhancing soil quality on this international platform, contributing to the development of global sustainable soil management strategies.

Under the FAO's framework, Peng will focus on sustainable soil management goals, collaborating with experts worldwide to protect soil resources and promote green agricultural development. This appointment signifies a further strengthening of China's voice in international soil research. With Peng's active involvement, China's practices in sustainable soil management are expected to gain global recognition and integration with international experiences, injecting new momentum into efforts to protect the "skin of the Earth" and ensure food and ecological security.
